Trade unions seek to protect the interests of their members. Anyone who is in employment can belong to a trade union (members pay a subscription). They do the following:
- Instead of each worker talking to managers individually, the trade union negotiates on behalf of all its members - the members usually obtain a better deal this way.
- The trade union will help its members to obtain a higher pay, better working conditions, shorter working hours and legal help in disputes with employers.
- They give their members social facilities, training and general legal advice.
There are four types of trade union:
- CRAFT UNIONS - these are the oldest. They represent a particular type of skilled worker.
- GENERAL UNION - look after the interest of unskilled and semi-skilled workers in any job and any industry.
- INDUSTRIAL UNIONS - represent workers who work in the same industry regardless of their job in that industry.
- WHITE-COLLAR UNION - represent office workers and professionals.
