Internal recruitment involves appointing existing staff. A known person is recruited. External recruitment involves hiring staff from outside the organisation.

INTERNAL RECRUITMENT

DISADVANTAGES

No new ideas can be introduced from outside the business
People already familiar with the business and how it operates - so less money spent on training.
May cause resentment amongst candidates not appointed - which can be demotivating.
Provides opportunities for promotion with in the business – can be motivating and increase efficiency.
Creates another vacancy which needs to be filled
Business already knows the strengths and weaknesses of candidates
-

EXTERNAL RECRUITMENT
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
Outside people bring in new ideas
Longer process
Larger pool of workers from which to find the best candidate
More expensive process due to
advertisements and interviews required
People have a wider range of experience
Selection process may not be effective enough to reveal the best candidate

Recruitment and selection process:
  1. Vacancy arises
  2. Job analysis: Identifies and records the responsibilities and tasks relating to a job.
  3. Job description: Written description of what the job consists of. It includes the formal title of the job, the main purpose of the job, the main duties and any occasional duties. It will also include details of who the job holder is responsible to and whether they are responsible for managing other staff.
  4. Job specification: The person specification lists the qualifications, experience, skills and personal qualities of the ideal candidate.
  5. Job advertised in appropriate media
  6. Application forms and short-listing
  7. Interviews and selection
  8. Vacancy filled
When a business decides to advertise a vacancy and wants internal recruitment, they should advertise it in:
  • the company’s noticeboard/website
  • if the company is too large, in a company newspaper.
When a business decides to advertise a vacancy and wants external recruitment, they should advertise it in:
  • Local newspaper. Usually not required high level of skill and therefore is likely that many people locally could fill these vacancies.
  • National newspaper. Usually be used for more senior positions when there are few local people who have the required skills, experience and qualifications of the job.
  • Specialist magazines and journals. These will usually be used for particular technical people such as scientists. These people will read the specialist magazines and see the advertisements.
  • Recruitment agencies. These are specialists in recruiting employees. They will advertise and interview people for particular types of jobs.
